Alisa Zhulina

Alisa Zhulina Portrait

Alisa Zhulina is a playwright and Associate Professor of Theatre Studies at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She is the author of Theater of Capital: Modern Drama and Economic Life. Her scholarship explores the intersections of theatre studies and economic theory, Marxist thought, and European literature from the long nineteenth century to the present.
 
Her plays have been produced over the past decade by Exquisite Corpse Company, New Perspectives Theatre Company, Floor Five Theatre Company, Dixon Place, the Downtown Urban Arts Festival, and the Festival de Teatro Alternativo in Bogotá, Colombia. Her latest play, Deepfake, won Echo Theater Company’s New Play Competition and will receive a staged reading in November 2026.
 
Her academic writing has appeared in Modernism/modernity, Modern Drama, Theatre Survey, and other journals, and her essays and criticism have appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Senses of Cinema, and Salon.
 
She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature, with a secondary field in Film and Visual Studies, from Harvard University.
